LYNN HERSHMAN LEESON

                                    This is Not Me, 2013
                                Mixed media in Photograph

I Had the tremendous opportunity to meet Lynn Hershman Leeson when I was working at Anglim Gilbert Gallery in San Francisco.

Hershman is an artist who focuses in using technology before it was even seen as an medium to use for artistic purposes to re-shape our experience to reality. She utilized feminist tendencies to think about cyborgs, complex thoughts about the end of the world, as well to examine our relationship with technology.

Her most recent works has to do with how intimate we have become with the digital culture and what does that mean.

The most recent large show she had was Civic Radar, located in Yerba Buena Center of the Arts (YBCA) in San Francisco, CA. It was a retrospective of several works from the 1960's up until now. I went to see this show, and the work that stun me the most was her DiNA, an artificial intelligence female character (played by Tilda Swinton) that understands what you are saying. It creates a conversation with the audience and gathers information by going real time to the internet and respond to the conversations that happen.

DiNA, Artificial Intelligent Agent Installation, 2004,(custom software, sound, voice recognition, voice synthesis, sensors, one way mirror; alternative presentation with projection), 64 x 60 x 17 cm (dimensions of installation variable), installation view Lynn Hershman Leeson. Civic Radar, ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art, Karlsruhe, 2014/2015 ..... Information taken from Lynn Hershman's Websitehttp://www.lynnhershman.com/project/artificial-intelligence/

Lynn is a pioneer of digital art, and she creates imagery that is bold, feminist, bionic, and above all, unique to the viewer.
